Brad Sigmon has chosen the firing squad for his scheduled March 7 execution. This will be the first time the United States utilizes the firing squad in 15 years. The state of South Carolina decided last year this method is NOT considered cruel and unusual punishment. Today, the South Carolina Department of Corrections issued an execution warrant for Brad Sigmon. His conviction was due to childhood trauma which succumbed to a severe, inherited mental illness that went undiagnosed and untreated. Brad is deeply remorseful and remains a source of strength, spiritual discernment, and support to all who know him.

As more executions are scheduled here in South Carolina, we are experimenting with ways to support volunteers and protestors on-the-ground after an execution has happened. If you are in Columbia for the Execution Vigil, we invite you to join us at Virginia Wingard UMC after the vigil has finished for a Support Circle (1500 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210). Vigils have been stopping around 7pm, but please check social media to make sure the vigil is over. We will have snacks and a few restorative practices to help with processing. Know that you can come as you are, and we will hold space for you.

"Three and a half years after announcing its investigation into the federal death penalty protocol, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on January 15, 2025 that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is rescinding the federal government’s single-drug pentobarbital lethal injection protocol. The DOJ’s decision was based on what AG Garland called “significant uncertainty” about whether executions by pentobarbital caused unnecessary pain and suffering. The DOJ’s statement expressed a desire to “err on the side of treating individuals humanely.” It followed an extensive set of consultations with federal and state authorities, medical experts, experienced capital counsel, and other stakeholders. Federal Execution regulations were not changed. Single-drug lethal injection is authorized by statute in 20 of the 27 states where the death penalty is legal."

Each session will offer tools and strategies for grassroots organizing as well as updates and opportunities for taking action. This month, we will be covering execution campaign updates, and what to expect for the rest of the year. We suggest you attend an info session or have some familiarity with the work of SCADP in advance of joining this group, but it’s not required.
