With executions paused in South Carolina until after the 2024 holiday season, SCADP is joining state and national partners across the United States in asking President Biden to commute Federal Death Row. The link to the petition is below: https://bit.ly/CommuteTheRowSCADP

The federal death penalty, like its state-level counterparts, is steeped in racial and geographic bias. Defendants often lack adequate defense, are convicted on the basis of unreliable and discredited forensic evidence, and face biased proceedings, with all-white juries in some cases. Most people on federal death row would not even be prosecuted under today’s Department of Justice standards, which limit death sentences to cases with significant national interest. Yet, their federal death sentences still stand. This makes the federal death penalty error-prone, unreliable, and deeply unjust.

Despite these glaring issues, the federal government under President Trump resumed executions in 2020, carrying out 13 executions in just seven months. Many of those executed had intellectual disabilities, serious mental illnesses, and histories of deep trauma, and their legal proceedings were tainted by racial bias, junk science, and other flaws. These deaths also occurred despite calls for mercy from victims’ families and demands for fairness from a broad coalition of Americans across political and faith backgrounds.

By commuting the sentences of those on federal death row, President Biden has the opportunity to take a crucial step toward ending unjust executions and advancing a more just, equitable America. This action will not only fulfill a promise made in 2020, but it will also be a meaningful step toward healing America’s long legacy of racial and economic injustice.

Here are 4 reasons why we need to #SaveRichard and why Richard Moore deserves clemency:

1. The death penalty is disproportionate: Richard was sentenced to death for the 1999 shooting death of convenience store clerk James Mahoney. Richard entered the store unarmed and defended himself when Mahoney pulled two guns on him. Moore wrestled one of the guns away and both Moore and Mahoney were shot. Mahoney died from his injuries. no other South Carolina death penalty case has involved an unarmed defendant who defended himself when the victim threatened him with a weapon.

2. The Former South Carolina Department of Corrections director says that allowing Richard Moore to live in the general population would be "a powerful force for good" and supports Richard's clemency.

3. Richard Moore is a father and Grandfather. Executing Richard creates new victims.

Richard Moore is scheduled to be executed on November 1, 2024, in South Carolina.
In 1999, Richard walked into a store unarmed—and ended up with a death sentence.

Richard’s sentence is disproportionate to the crime he was convicted of. Richard was sentenced to death for the shooting of James Mahoney, a convenience store clerk. He entered the store unarmed and defended himself when James pulled two guns on him. Richard wrestled a gun away, leading to both men being shot. Mahoney died, but no other death penalty case in South Carolina involved an unarmed defendant defending himself.

Richard is on death row because of election politics and racial bias. After Richard was arrested, the outgoing Spartanburg County Solicitor sought the death penalty to politically corner his opponent and eventual successor, Trey Gowdy. Gowdy decided to continue pursuing the death penalty to avoid appearing “soft,” even though Richard’s case didn’t warrant it. Prosecutors struck all eligible Black jurors from Richard’s trial, leaving an all-white jury to sentence him to death.

Richard’s family will become victims, too. Executing Richard will not only be an act of injustice towards himself. It will also take him away from his beloved children and grandchildren. He has spent more than 20 years on death row and still has been able to offer support and advice to his family from the inside. His daughter joined the Air Force, and his son, Lyndall, was valedictorian and a University of Pennsylvania graduate.

A: Nope! We have pre-assigned speakers, so all you need to do is stand with us!

Q: How long will the rally last?
A: It will last approximately 3 hours, from 2:00pm-5:00pm!

A: Parking can be found along Assembly Street, Gervais Street, Sumter Street, and Pendleton Street.

September 20th: Vigil at Broad River Correctional Institution | 4:30pm until execution | 4460 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210 | The Vigil will be led by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston
