South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (SCADP) Speaks Out Against Marion Bowman’s Scheduled Execution
On January 3, 2025, just three days into the new year, the South Carolina Supreme Court issued an execution warrant for Marion Bowman. He is scheduled to be executed on January 31, 2025.
A Statement from Executive Director, Rev. Hillary Taylor:
"Mr. Bowman is the second person with a wrongful conviction claim to be scheduled for execution in South Carolina in less than 6 months. What's more, Mr. Bowman's case highlights the flaws in our justice system concerning inadequate, racist legal representation. Mr. Bowman's case shows the inherent discrimination of the death penalty: our justice system does not care that the right person is executed. Any person is an adequate substitute, especially if that person is young, Black, and poor. Our taxpayer dollars would be better spent fixing our state's interrogation practices instead of incarcerating innocent citizens for decades before killing them. We call on Governor McMaster to follow the example of President Biden and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and commute Mr. Bowman's sentence to life without the possibility of parole.”

The mission of South Carolinians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (SCADP) is to abolish the death penalty and catalyze criminal justice reform in South Carolina.
